Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall, Why Do I Allow Society to Tell Me Who’s the Prettiest of Them All?
Why have we become obsessed with holding ourselves accountable to society’s standards of beauty? When you think long and hard, who do you believe the puppets that control us on a string to be?
To say that society has an intense obsession with images of beauty and perfection is an understatement. The problem that has become more like a plague is that we are now hostages of these images. We fail to allow our minds to acknowledge the untruths that are an intricate part of almost every image that we see.
Checkout these startling facts from Do Something:
- Studies show that the more reality television a young girl watches, the more likely she is to find appearance important.
- More than a third of the people who admit to “normal dieting,” will merge into pathological dieting. Roughly a quarter of those will suffer from a partial or full-on eating disorder.
- Approximately 91 percent of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape. Unfortunately, only 5 percent of women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media.
The book Consciously Beautiful: I Am Enough gives raw advice from women and teen girls who are actively working to love the reflection that they see in the mirror. One of the most candid pieces of advice offered was from Melissa who stated the following:
The hard truth is this: no matter how much we diet, apply makeup, get plastic surgery or lie to ourselves and those around us, true beauty can only be discovered by others when it is first found within ourselves. We must find a way to recognize beauty by our own standards and not allow society to dictate who we should be, what we should look like and most importantly how we should perceive ourselves. How would we view ourselves if photoshopped images were not our aspiration?
People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.
